Over 5 episodes, I’m going to be coaching you on finishing 2023 strong, strategising the rest of the year and me basically trying to help you as much as I can!

For the second installment of the series, we're talking about how to prepare seasonal content in your business.

When it comes to seasonal content, there's so much that can be done and there's so much fun that we can have. So we don't want to be rushing around at the last minute to whip up graphics, to think about promotion and to think about how to leverage the season at hand for our marketing.

That’s why I want to plant the seed during this Boss Your Q4 series so you can get the wheels turning, get inspiration, and plan in advance - so by the time the holiday season gets here, you have a plan.

You know what you want to do, you know what you want to promote, you know what you want to say, and it all ties together perfectly.

two types of season content to consider

There are two types of seasonal-based content to consider.

The first one is time-based content. This type is grounded in a season rather than a specific day. For instance, in September, you often come across numerous back-to-school campaigns. These campaigns are aligned with the ongoing season. Another example is our "Boss Your Q4" series on this podcast. While it doesn't adhere to a particular date, it's instead tied to the upcoming season. This is a key aspect to bear in mind.

The second kind of seasonal content you can prepare for is event-based content. This type is closely linked to a precise day, holiday, or event. For instance, you can think of Black Friday – it's a very specific event on a particular day. Another instance could be creating content for New Year's Day – another specific day. This opens up a plethora of possibilities for creating seasonal content, whether it's linked to the passage of time or tied to specific events.

Harnessing the Power of Seasonal Content: Why Relevance Matters

So you might be wondering, well, why does it matter? Do you have to do seasonal content?

Well, I'm never going to tell you you have to do anything but I do want to tell you about the importance of seasonal content.

The impact of planning seasonal content is relevancy. For instance, during Christmas time, I love watching the holiday adverts and exploring the festive marketing campaigns. Holiday gift guides also catch my interest because they perfectly align with the season we're entering. This captures my attention more than regular year-round marketing efforts. Designing content around different seasons, events, and holidays maintains the relevance of your marketing.

As early as July or August, we witness these seasonal campaigns. Think about Advent Calendars showing up in stores. Many companies intensify their marketing efforts during the holiday season. If you're not doing the same, you miss out on the relevance that other businesses are capitalising on.

So when it comes to planning seasonal content, it really is impactful to take these timeframes and holidays into consideration when you're planning for your launches so you can align it with your sales plan and the different promotions you have planned.

creative content Ideas

So, here’s a rundown of some different ideas and things that you can play with when you are thinking about seasonal-based content.

There’s a lot coming up during this time of year, from September's back-to-school buzz to October's Halloween vibes, and November's gratitude celebrations with Thanksgiving in the US. Black Friday and December's holidays add to the excitement, then Valentine's Day in February and the New Year momentum.

Another fun thing for you to do is head to daysoftheyear.com and it will give you all of the fun, less traditional holidays. So things like National Book Day or National Donut Day or National Pie Day. There's something going on essentially almost every day of the year that we just don't know about. So if you're stuck for content, and you want to take advantage of seasonal content, but you want to do it in a non-traditional way head to that site and see what's coming up, see how you can play with what's coming up and make it work for you.

Now that we're aware of the upcoming holidays, let's talk implementation. How can we make our marketing align with the festivities? How do we stay relevant? Let's explore some exciting ideas.

  1. Gift Guides Shine: Gift guides are everywhere during the holidays. You can create your own and even collaborate with others, using affiliate links to add value.

  2. Gift Cards: Can you create a gift card as a fun way to package up your services?

  3. Engaging Seasonal Games: Plan contests or giveaways that resonate with the current seasonal vibe. Think "trick or treat" challenges for Halloween or a gratitude-sharing event for Thanksgiving.

  4. Seasonal daily promotions: Put your spin on countdowns like the 12 Days of Christmas for a unique touch. You could do 12 days of discounts, or 30 days of gratitude for example. Customise it to whatever is relevant and you feel inspired to.

When you can tap into this relevancy and you're planning ahead, knowing what to nurture, what to sell, what your discounts are and you have such a strategic grasp on how you’re going to end the year, it comes easier and more impactful. If we can plan for this now, then we can relax and fully switch off during the Christmas season and the end of the year.

I hope these are plenty of ideas to get working on to take you until the end of the year and beyond!
