When I get asked how I got to where I am today, my answer is usually a combination of a few things. But two of them are always strategy and consistency… as in you have to have a super clear picture of where you are going AND you need to be ridiculously consistent.

I can FEEL you rolling your eyes at me right now at the moment of the C word…

When I say the word “consistency”, people either have one of two reactions: they get super excited and think “yes, I can do this!” OR they think “I don’t want to hear this again” and that’s where the eye roll comes in.

The reason I say this is because I used to be the person that rolled my eyes when somebody would tell me to be more consistent. I would think, “I’m already working so much, how can I possibly be more consistent?”

Fast forward to now? Consistency is a part of who I am. It’s a part of my identity. It’s a non-negotiable for me.

I’m going to teach you how you can get to this place too.

We’re going to cover three main buckets:

  • What consistency actually means (and what it looks like)

  • The “secrets” of consistency

  • Real-life examples of how you can be ridiculously consistent

1) What consistency actually means

I define consistency as the actions that move the needle forward in your business.

In the corporate world, this is called the critical path. How can you remove all of the noise and go directly to your end goal. That’s consistency.

Let me walk you through an example. If your goal is to attract 10 new clients, instead of banging your head against the wall and figuring out how to find them, you want to flip the script and think about how are you going to reach them and taking steps to get there.

Consistency comes from steps like this. Consistent actions on the right steps will get you there quicker, with more aligned results.

I advise focusing on 30 to 60 minutes of focused, consistent activity every day, needle-moving activity. It should feel more aligned, you should see more progress, and you should feel less overwhelmed.

So the cool part is consistency works but the second part of the consistency equation is making sure that your consistency is breeding results.

A big part of the work I do with my clients is measuring results to make sure you are working on the right things and adjusting. At the end of each week or each month, you want to look back at what were you consistent with and review.

Are you seeing the results that you want to see and ideally, you're logging your actions so you can actually see what is working and what is not. This allows you to make your business decisions and identify your next steps based on facts, not feelings.

So consistency is the magic part but the strategic part is looking at the results and adapting.

I wanted to share a couple of things that I have done consistently over the last few years that have really helped create some momentum and see results.

  1. I show up every morning on Instagram Stories, Monday through Friday with an engagement feature.

  2. I am ridiculously consistent with this podcast. Since the start of this year, I have released two podcast episodes every single week. We will celebrate a podcast birthday soon and we almost have 200 episodes now. There are times I wonder whether it’s worth it, but I’m still super consistent with it.

  3. Another thing that I do is spend time every week developing a long-term strategy. So you know, we have core habits here in the Busy to Boss community, yearly planning, quarterly planning, monthly planning, weekly planning, and daily planning. Every week, I have a boss CEO date with myself to really think about the bigger picture so that I'm aligned with my consistent actions.

  4. I consistency spend time each week creating more content so that I can serve you best.

2) the secrets of consistency

How does someone learn to become consistent? Even when you are feeling discouraged even when it feels hard? When it feels disappointing, and when it feels like your efforts aren't making a difference?

This is when I see people really struggle with staying consistent.

I want to use a non-business example for you here. So let's say you have a peloton, and it's been collecting dust for far too long. You decide one day that it’s time to get on the bike. You know your health goals and the journey you want to go on, and you have this conversation with yourself about why you’re getting on the peloton. No doubt, you will have a lot of very loud stories telling you it's gonna be really painful.

It’s the stories we tell ourselves, in this example, that're making you not want to get on the bike. In fact, they're making you dread the bike and avoid the bike. So that's why you need to ask yourself, ‘Okay, why am I choosing to get on the bike today?’

If it's not about it yielding you a result that you can see and feel today, then why would you do it? And this is the exact same conversation you need to have every day when you're thinking about engaging with your business.

I want you to think about it like getting on that bike and deciding why is it important for you to get on that bike today, even when I know it might not cause the exact result you want. It might not equate to a new customer today, it might not equate to your bank account growing significantly but you know it’s worth doing. Remove the pressure.

Being consistent and moving the needle forward is what commitment is. This is what it feels like to take committed action.

Every single choice you make today actually does matter; and not only that, but it's who you are becoming every time you decide to do something when you don't want to. I really want you to think about that.

3) How to be outrageously consistent

I want you to be ridiculously consistent in the categories that matter the most.

One of the tools I've stumbled on that has helped me with consistency is to use the acronym F.O.C.U.S.

F - Follow

O - One

C - Course

U - Until

S - Success

Follow One Course Until Success.

Let me give you an example.

Let's say you're in the middle of launching your first course and about a week before it launches, you start to get nervous and you think, ‘Oh, I'll just push it out. It doesn't need a big launch right now.’

The focus tool will work really well here. So what is your focus?

In this scenario, what was your goal? To launch the course? Was it for income or impact? Do you need to launch it by a certain date? Why? And then ask yourself why are you doubting the date.

Remember, doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. So you have to keep going.

Focus follow one course until success.

So if you want to make progress on your goals, then my question to you is, are you being consistent? And then my second question is, what is your focus?

Once you figure that out, here are some more ways to stay consistent.

  1. Are you setting your business hours and making time to work on your business? What are you doing in those hours, is it moving the needle forward?

  2. Are you surrounding yourself with people who are going to call you out when you aren't focused? Who is helping you stay on course with your bigger vision, so that you don't lose focus at the very end when you start to get nervous?

  3. Do you have the capacity to do what you set out to do? You have to have the capacity within you to be able to handle the next step. What capacity do you have to make those massive goals come to life? If you are tapped out and tired and feeling defeated all week, take the weekend off. That's the best next step for your goal, even though it goes against the grain of what you were taught. Clear some space, clear space in your mind to focus on one thing at a time, but also clear space for your goals.

Keep asking yourself how you are being consistent and what you are being consistent on. Stay tuned for more content on consistency from me!
