How To Have A Productive Afternoon Routine
What do you do in the afternoon? I bet you can pick at least one thing from this list:
- Scroll through Instagram
- Watch YouTube videos
- Think about what you're going to make for dinner
- Scroll through Instagram some more
I get that the afternoon slump is real and we all have a certain amount of hours in a day. But it's important we use these to our advantage.
And I know how hard you try, but sometimes the afternoon can slip away from us. So...
Here are some ideas for how you can have a more productive afternoon routine:
#1 | EAT A HEALTHY SNACK
Your willpower is like a muscle which needs refuelling, and eating a healthy snack is one of the best ways you can restore the willpower you lost earlier in the day.
Afternoon snacks I love are carrots with hummus, Nakd bars and cottage cheese which is my favourite food EVER.
#2 | EXERCISE OR GO FOR A WALK
I've started adding a short, low-impact workout to my afternoon routine and it's really helped my productivity. Or you could go for a short walk.
This isn't as much about exercise as it is about re-energising yourself.
You could even take a walking meeting, come up with some new ideas or listen to a podcast. The fresh air will do you the world of good.
#3 | MEDITATION
This is something I wish I could get more into, because it's a great way to re-energise.
It doesn't have to be this big thing - just take 10 minutes to give your mind a rest, reconnect, be present and become aware of your senses.
#4 | DO SOMETHING FOR YOU
Do something for you, something that you'll appreciate. Take 10 minutes to dedicate to doing this one thing for yourself.
By the end of it, you'll be so ready to get back on with your work.
#5 | HAVE SET TIMES FOR CHECKING EMAILS
You don't need to make this public, but setting boundaries for emails is really important. You don't want other people to dictate what you have to do.
It's so easy to let emails dictate how your afternoon is going to go, but if you don't check your emails for a certain period of time, they don't become an issue. So set boundaries and stick to them.
#6 | CLEAN YOUR DESK SPACE
If your desk is a mess, your head is a mess and you won't be as productive.
Do yourself a favour and take 5 minutes after lunch to clear your desk space. Put your pens back, tidy up your papers, give it a quick dust, make sure everything is in order.
#7 | FOCUS ON ONE THING
I bet sometimes you look at your to-do list in the afternoon and you realise you haven't ticked anything off. #Guilty.
If this happens to you, then focus on doing just one thing. Not something you can carry over tomorrow - something you can get done by the end of today. Focus on doing that.
