EMAIL MARKETING FOR BLOGGERS: HOW TO START, GROW & MANAGE A LIST

EMAIL MARKETING FOR BLOGGERS: HOW TO START, GROW & MANAGE A LIST

Now I know you know about the importance of having an email list. And I completely stand by the importance of this because of what it's done for my own online presence.

I want to try and make this as actionable as possible for you so there’s gonna’ be no messing around and we’re gonna get straight into it.

STEP #1 - PICK AN EMAIL SERVICE PROVIDER

There are pros and cons to every email service provider out there.

I started out with Mailchimp and it did the job for me for a while. But then I moved over to ConvertKit and it’s the best decision I've ever made.

I went from getting 4 subscribers per day to between 15 and 20 per day. Sometimes more.

ConvertKit is paid but if you’re serious about growing your list, it’s 100% worth it. You can create multiple forms, multiple sequences and it’s helped me grow my list more than I ever thought possible.

STEP #2 | CREATE A SIGN UP FORM

Once you’re signed up to your email service provider, it’s time to create your first sign up form.

So this is basically a form that people can fill out to join your email list.

What you don’t want to do is just say "subscribe now" or "join my newsletter for weekly updates". That’s not gonna lure people in. You want to appeal to people on a very personal level.

So be sure to create a sign up form that’s in line with your brand and is really catchy and intriguing. So for my resource library I can say "join the free library for exclusive blogging resources" and the button could say "I want this".

If you change the wording on the button too it’s going to get you even better results.

STEP #3 | CREATE AN OPT-IN

An opt-in is also known as a lead magnet or content upgrade and it’s basically a freebie that you offer to your users to entice them to join your email list.

Mine is my resource library but you could also create a PDF, eBook, email course, exclusive video, audio file - there are loads of possibilities. Just make sure it’s relevant to your audience and their needs.

If you’re not sure what to offer, take a look in your Google Analytics for your three most popular posts and create something based around one of those topics - like a natural added bonus.

So let’s say you’re a travel blogger and your most popular post is your guide to Dublin, you could offer an itinerary as your opt in.

Another way you could do it as a food blogger for instance is put your 10 most pop recipes in a PDF and give that away.

STEP #4 | PUT YOUR SIGN UP FORM AND OPT-IN ON YOUR WEBSITE

You’ve got your sign up form and opt-in - now it’s time to put them on your website so people actually sign up to them.

The key is to draw as much attention to them as possible.

The sign up form for your main opt -in needs to be in as many places as possible on your website:

  • Homepage
  • Sidebar
  • Footer
  • About page
  • At the end of every blog post

Basically don’t be afraid to put your sign up form all over your website.

STEP #5 | SET UP A WELCOME SEQUENCE

Once you get people singing up to your list you’ll want to introduce yourself and get them used to receiving emails from you.

A welcome sequence is the best way to make a great first impression.

A welcome sequence is an automated sequence you can set up to make sure that every person who signs up to your email list gets those emails from you.

A good starting point is to have three emails in your welcome sequence.

In terms of what to put in it you want to introduce yourself, tell them what they can expect from you, your blog and your emails. It’s a good idea to include a photo of yourself too, just to start to build up that relationship loyalty.

You could also direct them to your best blog posts, tell them where they can follow you on social media, and ask them something that will make them respond.

STEP #6 | EMAIL YOUR READERS REGULARLY

As soon as you start getting subscribers, you want to start emailing them regularly to build a connection with them,

So many people build their list and then don’t send emails to their subscribers - don’t be that person. Start by sending out 1 email per week.

Use your emails as mini blog posts, around 300 words, to share your experience and knowledge with your subscribers.

One thing I wouldn’t do is send out an email to promote every single blog post. because subscribers will soon get bored of that.

STEP #7 | CREATE MORE FREE OPT-INS

Now that you have everything set up you can start creating more opt-ins and more sign up forms. Keep coming up with quality freebies that you audience just can’t say no to.

A good place to start is to have an opt-in for every category on your blog and include them in all the posts that relate to that category.

You’ll find that some of your opt ins will get a few subscribers and others will get loads. Don’t be afraid to experiment but always keep your audience in mind.

BONUS STEP - PROMOTE IT

Content is king but promotion is the queen isn’t she.

So in order to get more people to sign up to your mailing list you want to get more traffic. A few ideas would be to create landing pages for your opt-ins' create graphics and add them to Pinterest, and promote them a often as possible on social media.

You are now armed with everything you need to go out there and conquer the tricky world of email marketing! So what are you waiting for?
